CURRICULUM ==> CLASS LINKS

Welcome to the Nanticoke Class page. Here you can see some of our displays and find out what we have been doing recently. We are a Year 1 class and are taught by Miss Norris.

We arrived back from the Easter holidays eager to start the summer term and to begin our new topic ‘Food, Glorious Food’. We have been especially interested in the different continents, food we eat every day, comes from. In mathematics, we have had lots of opportunities to use practical resources and have enjoyed practicing important vocabulary to describe capacity.

When learning the story of ‘Supertato’ we were excited to write letters to the Evil Pea, demanding that he returned the captured vegetables. We produced fantastic comic strips that retold the story.

Looking back at the Spring Term: Naticoke Class have been really interested in this term’s topic ‘Here Comes the Sun’. After learning the important parts and functions of plants, we enjoyed being creative and making natural collages using leaves, twigs and pine cones. We used images to help us with our ideas and we could even think of our own wildlife animals too.

Year 1 ended the second half of this term with a fantastic visit to the Blue Reef Aquarium. We were fascinated to learn lots of new facts about the incredible lives of different creatures that live under the sea. We got up-close to a starfish and a pasty crab as well as watching a turtle being fed. Since returning to the classroom, we have enjoyed sharing our favourite moments of the day and all the new things we learnt.

Since returning from our winter break, we have launched straight into this term’s learning. Our new topic is ‘Here comes the Sun’, as we look forward to the arrival of Spring and finding out lots about plants. In English, we have been learning the story of ‘Jack and Beanstalk’. We shared ideas with each other and thought of different ways we could change the story, before writing our own version.

In mathematics we have been learning to use different maths equipment to support our learning. Using Base 10, we can build numbers and recall how many tens and ones there are in a 2-digit number. We have applied our knowledge of number to answer simple multiplication and division calculations.

In computing we have been learning how to open hyperlinks to reach coding websites. Working with a learning partner, we can give instructions to navigate from one area to another. We have been busy making artwork for our first class assembly in Year 1. It has been really interesting learning about the important work that the RNLI do. We now know the different types of lifeboats that are used and why they need to use different ones. We have been practising our lines, ready to share what we have learnt with the rest of the school.

Looking back at the Autumn Term: It has been another busy half term in Nanticoke class as our learning around the topic of ‘Claws, Paws and Whiskers’ has continued.

In English we have especially enjoyed the stories of ‘The Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘How to Catch a Star’. We have started to explore how adjectives are used to make a story more interesting and add detail to events. We have been trying to use adjectives when we are sharing our ideas aloud with a learning partner.

In design technology we have been designing and making moving pictures. A rocket, just like the one in the story of ‘How to Catch a Star’, with a lever to help it reach the star.

We have been focussing on balances in gymnastics and have enjoyed using the equipment creatively in Physical Education.

Towards the end of the term, the children enjoyed making winter tree decorations to sell at the Winter Fair. Year 1 worked very hard to learn their lines and sing beautifully in our Christmas performance of ‘One Bright Night’.

Nanticoke Class has had a busy beginning to the year. We have started our new topic ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ and have been fascinated learning about what animals eat, how animals are different and how to classify them into groups.

In mathematics, we have been using our knowledge of numbers to 20 to write different types of number sentences. We have been practising how to write numbers, starting in the right place and going in the correct direction. In English we have particularly enjoyed learning the stories ‘Mog the Forgetful Cat’ and the ‘The Tiger who came to tea’. We have written sentences about our favourite stories and used drama to retell parts of the story. We have been working hard to form letters correctly and use full stops, capital letters and finger spaces to structure sentences.

During our Health and Hygiene day, we had a special visit from a nurse who showed us the importance of washing our hands. We used a special machine that showed us the germs on our hands that we cannot see.

We ventured out on our first educational visit to the Tesco store in Wadebridge. We wore our very own baker’s hats as we explored behind the scenes. We looked around the warehouse, the bakery and even stepped into the freezers. We then went onto Nine Ashes where we had a Teddy bear’s picnic! We are now looking forward to our Christmas production and our annual Winter Fair next half term.
